Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils

Essential oils are all the talk anymore and have so many uses. From soaps, to diffusers, to skin care products, to roll ons, or even wearing in lava stone bead jewelry! Everyone seems to have found uses for essential oils and many swear by them in their ability to heal.

With the rise in the use of essential oils, there are some companies out there that sell “snake oil” or not pure quality essential oils. These can pose a danger to your health as you don’t know fully what the composition is in that little vial.

Today we’re going to break down what to look for to ensure that you’re getting pure therapeutic grade essential oils. There are some ways to tell the quality that you might find helpful. I will also share some companies that are transparent and many find their oils to be of high quality.

Different Oils = Different Price Points

Whether you are just starting into essential oils or have been using them for a long period of time, you are well aware that they can be expensive based on the size of the vial and also regarding which type of plant, tree and/or flower you are purchasing. This is due to a number of reasons:

  1. You need a large volume of the plant to create the essential oil
  2. Plants need to be fresh which requires a specific way of harvesting and storing
  3. If there’s a middle man or the company is using multiple producers, shipping and costs get factored in and can raise the price
  4. Testing to ensure purity and quality of oils can also be added onto the price
  5. Some plants are harder to grow and maintain which adds to the cost as well
  6. Dependent upon which part is used for the oil (i.e. the leaf, stem, flower, so on and so forth)
  7. Method of extraction to get the oil (steam distilled or cold pressed, etc.)
  8. If the company has certain certifications
  9. Plant yield (roses take an exorbanant amount to create oil, so that means needing higher amounts of it)

As you can see, there are so many different factors that go into it that the price is going to vary. You will pay significantly more if you are looking for Rose essential oil or Jasmine versus lavender or say Patchouli.

Prices per company will vary so it is good to shop around to see where your dollar might stretch the farthest but at the same time you will want to make sure you know what you are purchasing is going to be of high quality.

Real VS. Fake

There are a few different ways you can determine if an essential oil is not pure or is fake. Preferably you can tell if it’s fake or not before you purchase, but if you do happen to buy one and you aren’t sure of it’s quality or maybe you’re out at a store and want to test it, there are ways you can.

  • Does it list multiple ingredients?
  • Is there a latin name on the bottle?
  • Have you searched the company to see the reviews online? Are they rated well, ok, or poorly?
  • Does the oil feel greasy or leave behind residue? Pure or true essential oil will not leave anything behind
  • Is the price significantly cheaper than other companies offer?
  • Is it stored/sold in a glass amber colored bottle? If not, that is a red flag. Oils are destroyed by UV light.
  • The bottle should contain a lot # and indicate the origin of source
  • Does the bottle say “fragrance oil” or use the word “fragrance” anywhere on the bottle?

These are some of the ways to identify the quality of essential oils and can help you spot a fake oil and one that may be dangerous or a waste of money to use.
